Protecting patient data is a vital part of running a modern dental practice and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to adopt best practice security across your business. That’s where two-factor authentication (2FA) comes in.

With 2FA enabled even if someone were to guess or steal your password, they still wouldn’t be able to access your account without your one-time code. It’s one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your account secure.

You’re probably already familiar with this process as its used for online banking, NHS systems and so much more. It’s now a standard part of protecting sensitive information and it only takes a minute to set up in Dentally.

Why enable 2FA?

Passwords alone are no longer enough to reliably protect sensitive healthcare data. Two-factor authentication adds a familiar, effective layer of protection by combining:

  • something you know (your password), and
  • something you have (a one-time security code).

Enabling 2FA helps to:

  • protect patient information from unauthorised access
  • reduce the risk of compromised or shared accounts
  • align your practice with modern healthcare and security best practices

Setting this up now helps future-proof your account and ensures your practice is prepared for evolving security expectations.

What’s new?

We’ve recently refined the 2FA setup process to make it quicker and more flexible. You can now add email as a way of receiving your one-time passcodes. Giving you more flexibility in how you secure your account while keeping protection simple and easy to manage.

How to enable 2FA

Setting up 2FA only takes a minute and can be done at a time that suits you:

  1. Log in to Dentally
  2. Go to 'My Account' > 'Security'
  3. Choose your 2FA method and click the 'Set up' button to the right of your chosen method.
  4. Enter the code and your password to complete setup.

A detailed step-by-step guide is available in our Help Centre.

A shared responsibility

Keeping your practice secure works best when everyone plays their part. As with managing user permissions, encouraging your team to enable 2FA helps ensure that only the right people have access to patient data.

When setting up 2FA, we recommend:

  • Making sure each team member can access the email or device they’ll use for login one-timecodes.
  • Users update shared or outdated email addresses associated to their account.
  • Managers removing access for any leavers.

It only takes a moment to turn on 2FA and the peace of mind it provides is invaluable.
